A Stilnovo designer lighting fixture—the Gravitino 541 lamp
A product that’s already perfect in its packaging. A second, plain shipping box. Filler material to fill the empty space. Adhesive tape to seal it.
For those who run an e-commerce business, this sequence is not just a waste of materials: it is a direct operating cost. It means double the packaging time, the purchase of filler material, and larger shipping volumes. For the end customer? There’s the added frustration of having to dispose of more waste.
The massive growth of e-commerce has changed the game; in fact, a focus on sustainability and operational efficiency is becoming a core value.
The problem of overpackaging in e-commerce
The packaging intended for online sales has different requirements than packaging designed for store shelves. In fact, it must protect the product all the way to the customer’s doorstep and convey the brand message at the crucial moment of unboxing.
For years, the main solution has been overpackaging: a primary (the brand) inside secondary (the shipping box), a true " Matryoshka" effect. Eco-design, on the other hand, offers an alternative that combines simplicity, effectiveness, and cost-efficiency.
Eco-design: the "less is more" philosophy
Designing with eco-design in mind means getting back to basics: focusing on function and eliminating packaging waste. The principles guiding this revolution are clear and embody all the values associated with smart packaging:
- Simplify: create packaging that is easy to assemble in the warehouse and easy for the customer to open.
- Cost-effectiveness and efficiency: ensuring maximum protection with minimal space and material.
- Environmental sustainability: using single-material products, facilitating disposal, and ensuring recycling at the end of their life cycle.
One-Box: Salco’s new packaging concept
It is from this "problem-solving" philosophy that our project was born “One-Box - the universal pack”. It is a radical rethinking of primary packaging for products intended for the e-commerce channel.
"One-Box" combines, in a single element, the protective function of shipping packaging (thanks to structural features designed to withstand handling by couriers) with the brand’s communication function during unboxing.
This project does more than just "reduce": it eliminates the need for secondary packaging, saying goodbye to overpackaging for good — "No more boxes within boxes".
Case Study: One-Box for Stilnovo’s Gravitino 541
Here’s an example of eco-design that emerged from the collaboration between Salco and Stilnovo . For the launch of the iconic lamp Gravitino 541, the brand needed a solution that reflected its values of design and sustainability, moving away from the old “box-in-a-box” approach.
The result is a corrugated cardboard made of corrugated cardboard that serves both primary packaging and a shipping box.
Here's how it works:
- Structural protection: Instead of using bubble wrap or plastic fillers, we designed an interior with cardboard made of cardboard that securely hold the lamp ,, protecting them from the typical shocks of courier shipping thanks to the structural characteristics of the packaging.
- Instant branding: Upon entering, customers are greeted by the Stilnovo logo, the graphic instructions, and the product design printed on the inside the lid. Brand communication is placed at the center of the unboxing experience.
- Total sustainability: The box is made from low-grammage that are lightweight yet high-performance, and is fully recyclable at the end of its life.
The benefits of a "one-box" solution
Adopting smart packaging like the one created for Stilnovo is not only an ethical choice, but also a business decision that directly impacts the bottom line.
- Reduces costs and environmental impact: Imagine eliminating the cost of purchasing shipping boxes and packing materials. This solution simplifies warehouse operations, minimizes material usage, and optimizes transport volumes: it’s more cost-effective and more sustainable.
- Enhances the shopping experience: designed to shift the focus of brand communication toward the customer at the moment of unboxing, enhancing the shopping experience.
One-Box allows you to rethink the entire supply chain with a focus on efficiency. It is concrete proof that it is possible to protect a delicate product like a designer lamp, reduce operating costs, and promote the brand all with a single packaging solution.
Is your current packaging still forcing your staff to pack empty boxes? Are you paying to ship air and filler material?
